WHY DID THEY CALL IT THE RED SEA ?

Since the Greek age and the red sea is called like that. ancient Greeks use to name the oceans and seas according to the colors like black sea and white sea (Mediterranean sea) . and so they named it red sea....what made them choose the red color exactly is not well known .

but, some theory says that it could be because of the red Color that appears along its mountain chain. which reflect the sun rays when sunset.

another reason for the name, is it looks due to the appearance that it can have once per 3-4 years as it goes totally red when some kind of algae blooms tinge the water with a reddish-brown color. there is also another reason for having this name as there is alot of corals that have red color which make it even appears from the outer space looks a little more reddish colored than other seas.

HOW DID THE RED SEA FORM ?

Would be a great thing to know about our blue planet where we live on and about its nature, specially the oceans and the seas. Egypt got a long coast lies to one of the most beautiful seas all over the world. The Red sea has passed several geological and major changes which made it appear like it is now. Did you know that one day the Red sea level was much higher than its level now by approximately 120 meters?...... Strange but true. In fact the Red sea started to form since some millions of years. This was found as a crack in the earth's crust maybe around 180 millions of years ago between the continents (Africa & Asia) , but have been established like it is now in the Oligocene approximately 40 million years ago. Some time during the formation it was covered with water but often the land was dry. About 5 million years ago at the end of the Miocene period when a great change occur made all the water evaporated from the sea (this explains why the Red sea is having a high percentage of salt). At this time the Red sea was not connected to the Indian Ocean like it is now. It has had this water from the ancient Mediterranean sea by some channels (where they dug sues canal), when another environmental upheaval in this area closed the connection between Red sea and the Mediterranean. But later the Indian Ocean broke the narrow neck which was blocking the Red sea (Bab el-Mandab straits which now rich around 120-80 meters depth) bringing the first indo-pacific faunas (fish-primitive animal-algae...etc) and corals which started to grow in shallow water. Later on, came the ice age (in the Pleistocene period) which made the water start to be locked up in the polar (the ice bergs) which made the sea level drops a bite more than 100 meters. At this time it could have been isolated again from the Indian Ocean but 15,000 years ago the last glaciations ended and so water melted again from the polar and raised to flood the Red sea basin with warm water. The red sea reached its level only 5,000 years ago which means that the corals growing in the red sea are very young. Some corals

What we don't know about those wonderful creatures, the Turtles?

.............Those distinguished fascinating creatures are facing a great danger of extinction because of the great losses in numbers, difficulty of reproduction and humans’ destructive environmental interference. Turtles eat soft corals and jelly fish it is why the plastic bags for example are responsible for killing around 45% of the turtles in the Red sea of the lost turtles each year, as they think it can be jelly fish and eat them. As well waists of boats and cities lies near by the Red sea cause big harm to the turtles. A turtle can live very long time, but first needs to survive in the very tough conditions as it goes out of the egg. Female turtles make the meeting in the sea but after should search for a beach to lay the eggs. Furthermore some reports say that turtles lay eggs in the same place that they have been laid at. They crawl until they get above the high tide mark (a place water level doesn't reach), then they start an uncoordinated digging to be able to get into the hole they dig. After it succeed, it takes a rest for a while then start another digging but only with it hind flippers to make a Brood chamber to lay the eggs in. After it takes another quick rest then start a rather fast laying for eggs (80-120 depends on kind), like so, eggs are felling in the brood chamber but never break due to the leathery covering surrounding it. At this time turtles never respond to what ever happens beside. They continue laying eggs without interruption. When the laid of the eggs is done they cover it again with sand and have some rest again before the trip back to the sea. However, usually this takes longer time to reach the sea as they lost a lot of energy during laying the eggs. But they are pretty sure they have done well with laying.

Baby turtles hatch after one to two months (depends on the kind as well) crawling directly after hatching towards the sea instinctively. They use one-time-only purpose tooth which is on the tip of their mouth (egg tooth) to get out of the egg which they lose it after hatching directly. In most cases the babies hatch at night, crawl to the surface, orient to the ocean and crawl to the water. In some cases the babies hatch in the day and they may go to sleep until it is night before they emerge from the sand. Sometimes the babies emerge in the middle of the day and then they are easy prey for birds flying over the beaches..... They can loose around 50-60% of their numbers in this short migration. The same on land as into the sea, they can be easy prey for big fishes and marine predators. Only 2-3% make it to adulthood and can be able to come back for nesting. After all the man is the greatest danger threatening turtles as they construct facilities and build on these beaches ............................. Really poor turtles! Lets all try to help them letting them the beaches to lay their eggs peacefully.
